Learning Objectives:
Moisture Control for Cavity Walls (1 HSW LU)
· Participants will understand the individual components that comprise a masonry cavity wall system and the characteristics of each component that contribute to moisture management.
· Participants will become familiar with conditions and details of a masonry cavity wall from base to top, and how each condition must be dealt with to handle moisture.
· Participants will learn to distinguish between minimum code requirements and best industry practices with respect to designing for optimum moisture penetration resistance.
· Using real construction examples and case studies, participants will be shown field conditions, both correct and incorrect, that illustrate the importance of workmanship of the bricklayer and mason contractor and their roles in providing water-resistant masonry walls.
Green Building Design with Concrete Masonry Units (1 HSW/SD LU)
· The new LEED 3.0 changes will be discussed.
· Attendees will learn how building with concrete masonry and hardscapes can contribute to specific LEED credits and to the health, safety, and indoor comfort of the building occupants.
· Explore options for going well above and beyond today’s minimum energy code requirements for commercial buildings
