This program takes a detailed look at a masonry cavity wall’s moisture management system, analyzing the components of air space, flashing, weeps, air barrier, mortar joints, drainage accessories, the masonry materials themselves, and perhaps the most critical component to a watertight wall, workmanship procedures. It will look at details and conditions throughout the wall that present unique opportunities for moisture intrusion via bulk water, air infiltration, and vapor diffusion, and how to mitigate moisture at these conditions.

 

Green Building Design with Concrete Masonry Units

Masonry can be used for a variety of different applications.  Because of its durable nature, and use of less embodied energy, it is a natural environmentally friendly building product. Masonry offers a variety of different architectural finishes that can greatly enhance the decorative appearance as well as significantly reduce building maintenance. This presentation will discuss green building and sustainable design benefits of concrete masonry including life cycle costs. The new LEED 3.0 changes will also be discussed, and attendees will learn how building with concrete masonry can contribute to specific LEED credits, and to the health, safety, and indoor comfort of the building occupants.

 Learning Objectives:

Moisture Control for Cavity Walls (1 HSW LU)

·         Participants will understand the individual components that comprise a masonry cavity wall system and the characteristics of each component that contribute to moisture management.

·         Participants will become familiar with conditions and details of a masonry cavity wall from base to top, and how each condition must be dealt with to handle moisture.

·         Participants will learn to distinguish between minimum code requirements and best industry practices with respect to designing for optimum moisture penetration resistance.

·         Using real construction examples and case studies, participants will be shown field conditions, both correct and incorrect, that illustrate the importance of workmanship of the bricklayer and mason contractor and their roles in providing water-resistant masonry walls.
